As the time spent with family at home is increasing due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, home learning tools that educate and provide a variety of experiences are in high demand.
Dr. Chang Hyeon Lee and his team at WiKim¡¯s Culture Convergence Research Group developed the ¡°Knock Knock Kimchi Cooking-Edu Kit,¡± which is a tool that allows children to make kimchi with their parents and become familiar with Korea¡¯s traditional kimjang culture.
¡®Since it is composed of both experiential and educational items, the ¡°Knock Knock Kimchi Cooking-Edu Kit¡± can simultaneously educate and enable users to experience kimchi. The experiential products include cooking supplies such as aprons and hats, pickled cabbage, kimchi seasoning, and instructions to prepare kimchi. The educational products are designed to effectively provide information regarding the history and types of kimchi, the function of lactic acid bacteria in kimchi, and the scientific principles contained in the pottery (onggi).
WiKim also recruited a group of testers under the title ¡°I Am the Star of Kimjang¡± this year. It seems to offer a great opportunity for parents and children to pass down the kimjang culture by using tools to experience and learn about kimchi, which suggests the potential for the on-tact commercialization of the traditional food culture. Families who are tired of social distancing can take advantage of this kit to bond as a family by making kimchi together.
