From the beginning of the year to June 17, 1,022 kimchi-related news items were reported in domestic media (metropolitan newspapers, economy newspapers, and broadcasting companies). Among them, topics intensively reported by various media were selected, and representative articles were randomly chosen for each topic and organized into tables (Tables 1 through 5). In the “Reporting Cases” table, articles possibly related to the political interests of specific people or commercial interests were excluded, and the title of “Contributor” was omitted.
Major topics reported then were “Export and trade balance”, “Imported kimchi”, “Controversy over the kimchi project in China”, “Controversy over the name of kimchi / pao cai” and “COVID-19 and kimchi”. The term “Controversy” was used only on some topics, but controversial articles were expressed across all news topics. The flow of news for each topic is summarized as follows.
